Introduction
In the heart of Grandview, Ohio, Inspired Designs was contacted by a client to transform a dated backyard into a functional, low-maintenance outdoor living space. The project included the removal of an old deck, installation of a permeable paver patio, a composite stair system with aluminum railing, a dog-friendly fence, and the addition of a brushed concrete parking pad for shared driveway access.
Every square foot of outdoor space counts when working with tight spaces. This featured project highlights how we turned a compact, aging and dilapidated backyard into a functional, low-maintenance retreat that meets city requirements and homeowner needs.

Project Basics
- Location: Grandview, OH
- Type: Backyard renovation (deck removal, permeable paver patio, composite stairs, aluminum railing + fence, brushed concrete parking space).
- Timeline: 8 days (late October – early November 2024).
- Homeowner Goals: Accessibility, Zero-maintenance, ground-level patio for accessibility, permanent safe stair stair system, fenced area for their dog, and improved driveway access.
Design Inspiration & Process

This project prioritized function over form, so the design centered around maximizing usable space in a tight lot. The homeowners wanted a ground-level patio for accessibility, zero-maintenance finishes, and colors that blended with their neighborhood’s architectural character. Function came first, but aesthetics were not forgotten:
Inspired Designs incorporated:
- Unilock Townhall pavers in a primary color.
- Hollandstone soldier course border in a complementary shade.
- Composite stairs paired with a sleek black aluminum railing to complement the home’s modern look.
- All materials approved by the Grandview Architectural Review Board and compliant with the city’s permeable paver regulations
Challenges & Solutions
Like many Grandview properties, this backyard came with tight lot constraints and strict city requirements for permeable pavers.
- Tight space & limited access → required a larger crew and patient staging.
- Strict city requirements → permeable base system installed to code.
Despite constraints, the team delivered on time and to spec.
Craftsmanship & Materials

To ensure long-term durability and neighborhood harmony, Inspired Designs used:
- Pavers: Unilock Townhall (main), Hollandstone soldier course (border).
- Base: Permeable paver base system.
- Other materials: Composite stair system, aluminum railing, aluminum fencing.
- Additional feature: Brushed concrete parking spot integrated with the shared driveway.

Final Result

The finished space delivered exactly what the homeowners envisioned when looking for functionality, accessibility, and aesthetically pleasing:
- A ground-level patio for family gatherings.
- A fenced area for their dog.
- Improved accessibility and parking through the shared driveway.
Homeowner’s 5-Star Review:
“Jim went above and beyond for our backyard patio and fence project. I would definitely recommend and use his services again.”
